Foil Underfloor Heating System

Enjoy gentle, energy-efficient warmth with our Foil Underfloor Heating System — a specialist electric heating solution designed for floating floors in well-insulated homes.

The Warmup Foil Heater – 80W/m² is a low-wattage heating system that delivers comfortable radiant warmth while helping to minimise energy use. Supplied by Eco Friendly Heating & Flooring, this system is ideal where floor finishes require controlled, even heat distribution.

This heating solution works particularly well beneath floating floors such as laminate, engineered wood, vinyl flooring and carpet when installed with the correct floor build-up.

Efficient, Even Heat

The reinforced aluminium foil layer provides consistent heat transfer across the full floor surface while also acting as a continuous earth layer for improved safety. Because foil heating is installed directly beneath the floor finish, installation is clean and straightforward with no need for self-levelling compounds or wet trades.

Foil heating mats are ideal for regular-shaped spaces where the elements can be rolled out in parallel runs and adjusted to suit the room layout.

Compatible with a Range of Floating Floors

Foil heating systems are designed primarily for floating floor constructions such as laminate and engineered wood flooring. When installing beneath softer floor coverings such as vinyl or carpet, a protective build-up such as a dual overlay board system should be used to ensure safe heat transfer and long-term floor stability. You can learn more about suitable floor build-ups in our Overlay Board Guide.

This type of system is not suitable for fully wet environments such as tanked wet rooms or walk-in shower areas. For tiled bathrooms or higher heat demand areas, alternative embedded heating systems may be more appropriate. Our Electric Underfloor Heating Systems Collection Guide explains the key differences between heating technologies.

Smarter Insulation for Better Efficiency

Installing foil heating over suitable insulation materials helps reduce downward heat loss and can significantly improve warm-up times. In many cases, good insulation can reduce heat-up time by up to 50% while helping maintain lower running costs. For more guidance on choosing suitable insulation, see our Underfloor Heating Insulation Buyers Guide.

You can also estimate heating requirements and system sizing using our Underfloor Heating Calculator.

Sustainable Warmth You Can Feel

At Eco Friendly Heating & Flooring, we focus on practical heating solutions that combine comfort, efficiency and sustainability. Foil underfloor heating systems are particularly effective in highly insulated properties where gentle background warmth is preferred.

If you are comparing foil heating with other electric heating technologies, our Electric Heating Guides provide helpful insights into system selection, performance and suitability.

For deeper technical guidance, you can also explore our detailed Foil Underfloor Heating Guide and review real installation examples in the Foil Heating Running Costs Guide.

How quickly does foil underfloor heating warm up?

Foil underfloor heating begins producing warmth almost immediately after switching on. Most floating floors such as laminate or engineered wood start to feel warm within 20–40 minutes, depending on insulation levels and floor thickness.

Bringing a room fully up to temperature typically takes 1–2 hours, especially in colder conditions or poorly insulated spaces.

Is foil underfloor heating powerful enough to heat a room?

Foil heating systems such as 80W/m² outputs are usually designed as background or comfort heating in well-insulated homes.

They can sometimes act as primary heating in small or highly insulated rooms, but higher wattage systems such as heating mats or carbon film may be more suitable where heat demand is higher.

What flooring can foil underfloor heating be used with?

Foil heating is designed primarily for floating floor installations, including laminate and engineered wood flooring.

It can also be used beneath vinyl or carpet when installed with a protective build-up such as a dual overlay board system, which ensures safe heat distribution and floor stability.

Can foil underfloor heating be installed in bathrooms?

EcoFoil heating systems can be used in some bathroom environments when installed beneath floating floors and protected by an RCD, but they are not suitable for wet rooms, tanked floors or walk-in shower areas.

For tiled bathrooms, embedded heating mat systems are generally a better solution.

Do I need insulation under foil underfloor heating?

Yes. Installing foil heating over a suitable thermal insulation layer or insulation boards is strongly recommended.

Good insulation helps direct heat upward into the room, improves warm-up times and reduces running costs.

What thermostat should I use with foil underfloor heating?

Foil heating systems should be controlled using a programmable thermostat with a floor temperature sensor.

Popular compatible options include the Flexel Touch WiFi Thermostat for smart control or the Heatmiser Slimline-E for reliable programmable heating management.

Is foil underfloor heating expensive to run?

Running costs depend on electricity tariffs, insulation levels and heating schedules. Because foil systems are typically lower wattage, they can be very economical to run in well-insulated properties, especially when controlled using programmable thermostats.

Can foil heating be installed under furniture?

Heating elements should not be installed beneath fixed or heavy furniture such as wardrobes or kitchen units, as this can restrict heat transfer and reduce efficiency.
