Flexel EcoFoil Aluminium Underfloor Heating Mats

Flexel ECOFOIL Aluminium Heating Mats provide efficient radiant heat for floating laminate and engineered wood floors. Designed for dry installation, these mats require no self-levelling compound and are uniquely suited for wet areas such as bathrooms where traditional carbon film systems should not be used.

With a low build height of just 7mm when paired with insulation, EcoFoil offers a fast, practical and energy-efficient heating solution for modern homes.

How EcoFoil Underfloor Heating Works

EcoFoil mats use a heating cable encased in aluminium foil. This foil layer spreads heat evenly across the entire floor surface while also acting as a continuous earth layer for improved electrical safety.

This makes EcoFoil one of the safest and most effective electric underfloor heating systems for floating floors in moisture-prone environments.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Dry installation – no self-levelling compound required
  • Low build height – only around 7mm with insulation
  • Fully earthed aluminium layer – safe for bathrooms and wet areas
  • Even heat distribution – consistent warmth across the floor
  • Quick installation – roll-out system for faster fitting
  • Ideal for floating floors – laminate and engineered wood

Best Flooring Types for EcoFoil

EcoFoil is designed specifically for floating floor constructions, including:

For softer floor finishes, refer to our Overlay Board Guide.

Suitable Rooms & Applications

EcoFoil works particularly well in:

  • Bathrooms and shower rooms
  • Kitchens with floating floors
  • Bedrooms and living areas
  • Well-insulated modern homes

If you are installing tiled flooring instead, consider heating mats or loose wire systems.

Important Installation Considerations

  • Must be installed over suitable insulation (not directly onto concrete)
  • Requires 30mA RCD protection (in line with regulations)
  • Do not install beneath fixed furniture or sanitary ware
  • Maintain spacing from walls and fixtures
  • Thermostat must be located outside bathroom zones

For full installation guidance, see our Foil Underfloor Heating Guide.

Improving Efficiency with Insulation

Using suitable insulation boards such as ECOMAX Lite helps reduce heat loss, improve warm-up times, and lower running costs.

You can estimate system sizing using our Underfloor Heating Calculator.

Compare EcoFoil with Other Systems

  • EcoFoil – best for floating floors in dry or wet environments
  • Heating Mats – best for tiled floors
  • Loose Wire – best for irregular layouts

FAQ's

Can EcoFoil be used as the main heat source?

Yes. In well-insulated rooms, EcoFoil can provide primary heating when correctly sized. In larger or less insulated spaces, it is often used as a supplementary heating system.

Is EcoFoil suitable for bathrooms?

Yes. EcoFoil is specifically designed for use in bathrooms and wet environments. The aluminium foil layer provides full earthing, making it safe where carbon film systems are not suitable.

What flooring can EcoFoil be installed under?

EcoFoil is ideal for laminate and engineered wood floating floors. It can also be used under vinyl or carpet when installed with the correct overlay system.

Does EcoFoil require insulation?

Yes. EcoFoil must be installed over a suitable insulation layer. This improves efficiency, reduces heat loss and ensures the system performs effectively.

Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Voltage: (230V, 50Hz)
  • Heat Output: (140W/m²)
  • Mat Width: 500mm
  • Cold Lead Length: 3m
  • Advanced fluoropolymer heating cables encased in an aluminium foil
Can ECOFOIL be used in bathrooms?
Yes. Unlike some other film-based systems, ECOFOIL is specifically designed for wet environments like bathrooms and shower rooms because its aluminium layer acts as a safety earthing grid.

Do I need to use a self-levelling compound?
No. ECOFOIL is designed for dry installation, meaning it can be placed directly under floating floors without the need for screed or self-levelling compounds.

Is insulation required for installation?
Yes. Flexel recommends installing ECOFOIL on top of a suitable soft insulation material, such as ECOMAX Lite, to improve efficiency and reduce heat-up times. It should never be installed directly onto bare concrete or timber.

Can I cut the mat to fit my room?
During installation, you can cut and turn the foil mat to fit the room's layout, but you must never cut the actual heating cable itself.

What is the total floor build-up height?
When used with 6mm ECOMAX Lite insulation, the total build-up height is approximately 7mm, making it an ideal solution for renovations where floor height is a concern.
